ARPEGGIO
(ar-pej-jeo) Music. 1. The sounding of the notes of a chord in rapid succession instead of simultaneously. 2. A chord thus sounded. Also called a broken chord.
Episode 2 - Calling
Arpeggio has been a work-in-progress for some time. Today’s page was originally
done as a “Sunday extra” for the strip. Shortly afterward, it was used as
illustration in the book Ravens in the Library, a benefit anthology
put together by Sandi and Satyr last year. The inspiration for this image
– and this episode – came from another S.J. Tucker song, “Daughter of the
Glade,” and from the song that inspired that song, “Creature of the Wood,”
by Heather Alexander (now Alexander James Adams). In Ravens, today’s image
illustrated the lyrics to those two songs. In today’s episode, it appears
in its original context.
The lyrics to “Lover-of-Shadows” – and to all of Meghan’s songs, for that
matter – were written by Satyr and are original to this strip. The full
song spans the next two episodes, and has been condensed to fit the panel.
As of yet, no one has put these songs to music. Any takers?
Today's real musical track comes from Faith and the Muse's album Annwyn, Beneath the Waves. Its "Come alive!" refrain seemed to fit today's episode perfectly. Enjoy!
LOVER-OF-SHADOWS
I’ll seek you out
in grottos and in glades
Feet in soil, soul in sky
My song would tempt the very Furies
where they sleep
and dare to catch
your darkling eyes
I’ll stand beneath
an open challenge moon
take your hunger as my own
My voice is calling past
The granite walls
of every fear
and dares to ask
what I’ve been shown
I can’t see you yet
Teste your breath or
breathe your heat
Still I know
you’re in there just the same
Lover-of-Shadows
I’m calling your name
Lover-of-Shadows
I’m calling your name
Silence and stillness
remain my refrain
wrap my songs
in feather and flight
Riding the currents
from daybreak to night
Get lost in the secrets
Challenge the Fates
Lay down in dust
and awaken in flames
I’ll seek you out
in grottos and in glades
Feet in soil, soul in sky
I come before you
to assume the Tempter’s gaze
and dare to take you
as my prize
I can’t see you yet
Taste your breath or
breathe your heat
Still I know
you’re in there just the same
Lover-of-Shadows
I’m calling your name
Lover-of-Shadows
I’m calling your name
